Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is the use of inhaled medical oxygen as a therapy for a variety of health conditions and diseases. 100% oxygen is breathed while in a hyperbaric chamber. The pressure in the chamber is increased between 1.5 to 3 times ambient pressure (room air). The high level of oxygen that is breathed into the lungs leads to high levels of oxygen in the blood and increases oxygen levels in perfused tissues. This decreases swelling of damaged tissue and mitigates over-reactive immune response without suppressing the immune function. As therapy continues, pro-angiogenic (blood vessel creating) and hematopoietic (red and white blood cell creating) stem cell mobilization increases and inflammation decreases which leads to optimizing the healing process.
- Increase the amount of oxygen carried by the blood, enabling the oxygen to be dissolved into tissue, organs, lymph, and cerebrospinal fluids in the brain stem and spinal cord.
- Stimulate the growth of new blood vessels in injured and hypoxic (low oxygen) tissue and organs.
- Reduce swelling, decrease inflammation, optimize immune function and stimulate the mobilization of stem cells
