USA Indications

• Air or gas embolism;[5]
• Carbon monoxide poisoning;[6][7]
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning complicated by cyanide poisoning;[8][9][10]
• Clostridal myositis and myonecrosis (gas gangrene);[11][12][13]
• Crush injury, compartment syndrome, and other acute traumatic ischemias;[14][15]
• Decompression sickness;[16][17][18]
• Enhancement of healing in selected problem wounds;[19][20][21]
  • Diabetically derived illness, such as diabetic foot,[22][23] diabetic retinopathy,[24][25] diabetic nephropathy;[26]
• Exceptional blood loss (anemia);[27][28]
• Intracranial abscess;[29][30]
• Necrotizing soft tissue infections (necrotizing fasciitis);[31][32]
• Osteomyelitis (refractory);[33][34][35]
• Delayed radiation injury (soft tissue and bony necrosis);[36][37][38]
• Skin grafts and flaps (compromised);[39][40]
•  Thermal burns.[41][42]

HBOT is "Approved" in the United States In the United States Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is approved for 13 accepted indications taking guidance from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS). However Internationally HBOT is indicated for many more conditions including those listed below. These international indications are supported by strong scientific and clinical evidence that provide very robust substantiation for their use in these conditions. In some cases the international evidence provides more compelling validation than that used to support the 13 accepted indications used in the United States. These internationally accepted indications are treated as "off-label" use in the United States. Off label use of any FDA approved device or drug is allowed by the FDA for physicians and has contributed to the mounting evidence that off label use of HBOT has great merit especially for those conditions that have international acceptance. There are many common uses of off label drugs and devices in the United States.  FDA approved drugs and devices are routinely used off label in doctor's offices and hospitals across the United States. The use of HBOT for internationally accepted indications is similarly an off label use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
